Quiet Times

This time of year is bonanza time for internet retailers, the online Christmas rush is in full swing. Every other day someone claims “today” is the biggest day for buying online, and no doubt before December the 25th there’ll be reports about the demise of the High Street. I’m not especially gifted that I can see into the future, it’s just what happens every year.

Believe it or not, this is our slowest time of the year. No one is really that interested in travel, too busy shopping and getting ready for the big day. For us things kick off around the first working Monday after New Year. People get back to work facing the certainty it’s only 350-odd days ’til next Christmas and get to thinking about booking a nice holiday somewhere warm. Or going on a diet. Or taking out a loan.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re frantic here, trying to get everything ready for January. We’ve got new servers coming online, with a bit of loadsharing to keep the traffic flowing smoothly through peak hours. We’ve also got some new technology to put onto the site, which should be industry leading before the end of the 2007 all things going well. Trying to sort out a new navigation/layout, make some final tweaks to SEO, rebuild another site of ours from the basement up (keep working Happy!) and obviously do our Christmas shopping online too!

This year (2006) January was a record month for us, with traffic rising to unprecedented levels, which continued through February and March. Fingers crossed we see the same kind of rise in visitors this year!

Early New Year’s resolution, we really must get that Christmas website up for next year…

With regards to shopping…..I hate city/town centres. They’re full of people this time of year….yuk!

Then there’s the parking, local councils make it as hard as possible and then charge you a fortune for the privilage.

Thank god for online shopping…….99% of my shopping last year and this year is done online……what an invention.

Sales online are expected to reach £7bn this year, which is an increase of 40% on last year and double the 2003 figures!!!
