SMO - Social Media Optimisation
Came across this last night while reading a few blogs. It caught my interest as it could be applied to our site, and like the best of ideas it all just seems like common sense when you read it.
“The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches on custom search engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs.” Rohit Bhargava
This was posted on August 10th and seemed to have attracted a lot of attention. Rohit listed his “5 rules” and has seen this list grow to 16 rules with input from many others.
Applying this to our site seems like a good move, allowing our users to create external bookmarks and tagging to enhance their experience of the site’s content. The reward for us would be increased visibility in these social search engines, and hopefully bringing in new traffic.
As this is still very new to us we’ve brought in some outside help, just to help confirm these changes won’t be detrimental to the site and to recommend exactly how we go about it. Our SEO guru is on the case. More soon…

Interesting post, can see how it would work. One very good example I guess would be YouTube actually giving you the html to include a video in your site. Gets your content out there all over the place in dribs and drabs and gets visitors back, could do it with HW video reviews, brand them up and get them out there. Im sure the people adding the videos and reviews could easily be tempted to create a mini site with their photos and stories on if they had someone hosting the video for them.
All seems like common sense but as with anything online as soon as someone gives it the 3 initials it becomes a fine art, a few consultants appear and a lot of hype builds it up!
